In this economy, saving money by reducing energy costs has become a priority in almost every household. Since electricity bills account for a big chunk of our household budget, there are a lot of opportunities to lower the electricity costs and save more money. Limiting the Use of Appliances

The refrigerator is one of the main culprits of high energy costs in our households. The reason for this is that most refrigerators have high wattage and they run 24 hours a day. Other appliances that consume a lot of electricity are washing machines, dryers, dish washers and air conditioners. The easiest way to save energy when using these appliances is to limit their use. For refrigerators, make sure that it is not too full so the motor is not overworked. It is also advisable to manually defrost the freezer when the ice reaches a thickness of ¼ of an inch. To limit the use of dishwashers and washer-dryers, make sure you have a full load before using these appliances. This not only saves energy, it saves water, too. As for air conditioners, there are models that automatically adjust the thermostat when it reaches a certain temperature. This means that it does not use full power all the time. Also, to limit how long you would use it, set the timer. The room temperature stays cool after it is turned off, so you don’t need to keep it on the whole time you are in the room.

Energy Star

Another way to save money is to use appliances marked with the Energy Star seal. These appliances are designed to save consumers from high energy costs. Products with this seal have complied with energy efficiency guidelines. Aside from lowering our utility bills, Energy Star products also reduce carbon emissions and this helps our environment as well. It may seem expensive to replace our current appliances, especially the ones in good working condition, with energy efficient models, but you will be saving more money in the long run.

There are a lot of other ways to cut down our electrical bills. Every kilowatt-hour (kWh) we save counts and taking small steps can lead to big savings on energy costs in the future.
